Default WOTLK Frost/Arcane Mage Talent Spec

I spent a bit of time fiddling around with an undergeared mage to see which frost heavy specs worked nicely for leveling 60-70. I found that straight deep frost was nice but didnt really have very good mana management: I had to drink every two or three fights.

    Then I started to use:
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft
as my template for frost and placed the remaining points to the arcane side (in particular for clearcast and magic absorption) with the objective being to reach around here:
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft

I dabbled briefly as full arcane which was definitely nice - they fixed the previous mana management problems and the instant cast arcane barrage there is pretty nice (something you can cast while running like mad from the mob you have slowed!) Anyone else fiddled around? What do you think?

If I were to start playing again, I would start out with something like this for leveling.

Finishing up arcane after finishing the frost tree. At 70 it would look something like this:

How's your leveling going? If you leveled your mage.

actually i am working the warrior first. He is currently level 73 and still prot spec. The one thing I have noticed though is that there is a huge lack of tanking gear - both in instances as well as quest rewards. Kind of sad... But at least solo as a warrior isn't too horrible anymore.

Next up will be the druid, then maybe a dk or mage/priest/pally/whatever

I agree they are much better than they were in the early days of bc. but they are still too much glass and not enough cannon (i.e. easily outdpsed by other more solid classes).

Well it completely depends on what you want out of your character. From what I've seen, they're awesome in PvP right now.... and I haven't read anything about their PvE output. But at the beginning of BC they were pretty awful. Banana_Man and I got our two mage team up to high 1800s in season 1. We also had a 3 mage 3v3 that got up to the high 1800s as well. Even if they were underpowered, they still performed.

Plus, what isn't to like about mirror image? XD

I was doing well with my frost mage until I decided to respec my druid to boomkin.

I was doing about 900 dps on my mage who is considerably better geared than my druid. Then I made my druid a moonkin and I do over 1100 dps during any instance. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. My moonkin is always top on the dps meters.

I'm going to level in this fashion... DK to 70 then get rested xp, druid to 80, DK to 75, mage to 80, DK to 80. Warrior will take a back seat for now.

I had no problems with mana as frost with my mage. I mean with replenish and other new skills, it was difficult to run out of mana. Now my moonkin never drinks... I mean never. If I need to mana up, I use innervate. By the time I need mana again (if I need mana again), innervate is ready. The only time I would have to drink is if I innervated a healer during a fight, which sometimes I do for no reason at all. Sometimes I'll innervate a mage because I see them trying desperately to catch me in DPS and then they are OOM, lol...

My boomkin NEVER runs out of mana... NEVER.... over 10k hp buffed and 12k mana buffed. Moonkins are sick.

EDIT: Here is my mage's build. She rarely runs out of mana, if I drink it's just to top off before a boss fight.
